Lewis Nance v. William Hickman
Abstract
|
William Parrott represented not only Benjamin Clark in his suit against William Hickman, but also another plaintiff, Lewis Nance. On August 28, Parrott filed a second declaration against Hickman, also for trespass on the case for slander, alleging that on May 1, 1827, in Hempstead County, Hickman had "with a loud voice" said to James Holman and John Burman that Nance had murdered Jarret Berry and Edward H. Morris. Nance sued for damages of $20,000. David E. McKinney issued a summons for Hickman, which was served by Deputy Sheriff George R. Dooley. Again, the record does not indicate who Hickman's attorney was, but he responded with the same defense strategy as in Clark v. Hickmana demurrer and joinder. In this case, also as in Clark v. Hickman, the parties agreed to dismiss the suit and Hickman paid the costs. |
